From the serene tranquility of pastoral scenes to the awe-inspiring grandeur of rugged terrains, this exhibition celebrates the enduring fascination with landscapes as a subject of artistic expression. Drawing inspiration from art historians, we delve into the profound significance of landscapes as a mirror to the human experience, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity of our world. John Ruskin's words echo through the halls of this exhibition, reminding us that "Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have the eyes to see them." Ruskin's sentiment underscores the essence of our showcase, emphasizing the artist's role as a mediator between the raw beauty of nature and the viewer's perception.

Ann Bermingham, in her seminal work "Landscape and Ideology," posits that landscapes are not merely representations of nature but are imbued with cultural and ideological meanings. Each brushstroke and compositional choice reflects not only the artist's engagement with the physical environment but also their socio-political context. Kenneth Clark, in "Landscape into Art," traces the evolution of landscape painting as a distinct genre, arguing that landscapes offer a canvas for artists to explore the sublime, the picturesque, and the everyday, transcending mere depiction to evoke profound emotional responses.

Susan Sontag, in "On Photography," challenges us to reconsider the relationship between reality and representation in landscapes, particularly in the age of mass media and digital manipulation. As viewers, we are confronted with the question of authenticity and the subjective nature of our perception. Simon Schama, in "Landscape and Memory," delves into the cultural memory embedded within landscapes, emphasizing how artists evoke nostalgia, longing, and belonging through their portrayal of familiar terrains. Landscapes become repositories of collective history, shaping our understanding of identity and place.

I am inspired by nature. I acutely feel her fragility and at the same time great strength. I am interested in architecture, cityscapes, people with their various characters and emotions.

Maija Purgaile

This poignant artwork captures the essence of a crimson sunset casting its glow over a landscape scarred by the ravages of war. The battered trees stand as silent witnesses, their branches bearing the wounds of conflict. The scorched earth beneath them tells a somber tale of invasion, depicting the aftermath of Russian military aggression on my homeland. Through the artist's skillful portrayal, the painting conveys a powerful narrative of resilience amidst the devastation wrought by conflict.

The influence of calligraphy has always been significant in my artistic work. It is an art that requires concentration, balance, and is a source of relaxation. When letters, words, colors, and materials come into motion, one feels a certain energy. It's a freedom to translate feelings, emotions, and a sense of calmness. Highlighting writing, which is the memory of the world. A fragile boundary between art and the necessity of transmitting knowledge. The art of gesture and movement, the pursuit of inner well-being to regain a certain serenity.

Through artistic reworking, I stage different scenarios as places of the soul, territories of memory, dreams or nostalgic longing. My intention is to make the viewer, through contemplation of the spaces represented, be led to attribute to them an independent meaning, listening to the feelings suggested by the colors.

The first artwork describes yellow coastal flowers with blue sea view like the colors of my native blue-yellow flag. I’m an Ukrainian artist. I created my artworks when my daughter and I have stopped in Bulgaria, hiding from the war. Here, on the shores of the Black Sea, I painted this seascape. It depicts our evening in Burgas yacht port. Incredible colors of sunset sky and sea with parked yachts like a symbol of rest and silence.

Corina Nani

Landscapes form the base of my work. Depending on the circumstances I work with a digital or analogue camera and use different (in-camera) techniques such as double exposure and intentional camera movement. Creating a visual interplay between the natural environment and its graphic interpretation. By using different printing techniques and materials I try to create an abstract impression of a natural landscape with layers, depth, and disturbance.
